Police have been allowed to detain for 21 days two bus crew members linked to sexual molestation of a woman passenger in Githurai, Nairobi.

A Nairobi court ordered that the suspects, Nicholas Chege Mwangi and Meshack Mburu Mwangi, be detained at Kasarani Police Station pending investigations.

On Wednesday, the woman was stripped and sexually molested in the matatu plying the Githurai 44 route. The incident, which was recorded on video, was circulated on the Internet, including on social media.

ROBBERY WITH VIOLENCE

On Friday, the prosecution said the suspects may be charged with robbery with violence in addition to the sexual offences facing them.

The prosecution said this is because the video clip also shows the woman being robbed in the process.

The Law Society of Kenya has appointed lawyer Cliff Ombeta to prosecute suspected molesters on behalf of all the victims who have been forcefully undressed, and who are yet to lodge a formal complaint with the police.

Mr Ombeta appealed to all the victims of harassment to come forward and record statements as the alleged molesters were already in police custody.

On Thursday, five men appeared before a Makadara court for allegedly undressing and sexually assaulting a woman in Nairobi’s Kayole estate.

The five did not plead to charges as one of them is deaf and mute and requires an interpreter.
