A former senior military official jailed over the 1982 attempted coup has been awarded Sh37 million.

A three-judge bench of Court of Appeal ruled that Peter Kariuki’s constitutional rights and freedoms were violated when he was arrested, sacked from the forces, tried before a court martial, jailed for four years and stripped of his rank as Commander of the Kenya Airforce.

Appellate Judges Patrick Kiage, Kathurima M’Inoti and Jamila Mohammed also ordered that Mr Kariuki’s Major General's rank, benefits, honours and decorations as a Commander of the Kenya Airforce be restored, almost 32 years after he was sacked from the forces.
