Three women were on Thursday charged with selling a three-week-old baby for Sh35,000.

Ms Eunice Ng’endo Nyaga, 21, the mother of the baby boy, was accused of failing to protect him from being sold, while Ms Mary Atieno and Ms Christine Ndululu Mbula, were charged with selling him.

According to the prosecution, Ms Nyaga posted an advertisement on Facebook announcing that she had a healthy baby boy for sale and provided her mobile phone contact.

Officers from the children’s department got wind of it and laid a trap for her.

On April 16, a children’s officer, Ms Mary Njeri, posed as a buyer and went to Ongata Rongai in Nairobi, where the baby was to be delivered.

Mr Atieno and Ms Mbula brought the child to her but were arrested by undercover police officers.

They led police to Ms Nyaga’s house at Kware slums in Ongata Rongai, where she was arrested.

The women denied the charges before a magistrate in Nairobi and were remanded until April 22.
