Dad ‘cut off’ son’s ear, tried to make him drink blood

A 40-year-old father chopped off his six-year-old son’s ear and tried to force him to drink his own blood, a court heard on Tuesday.

Mr James Shisia Wanda allegedly collected blood oozing from the right ear of his son in a basin.

“It is this blood which the accused tried to force his son to drink on the night of June 29, 2014, at their home in Mathare 4B,” Chief Inspector Alice Njeru told Milimani Resident Magistrate Eda Agade.

The boy, however, refused to drink the blood.

Mr Wanda, a casual labourer, is said to have returned home at 7.30pm drunk and asked the pre-unit pupil about his alleged theft from him and neighbours. The boy denied everything.

Mr Wanda beat his son then chopped off the ear as his siblings and stepmother watched.

“Pleas from the stepmother to leave the boy alone fell on deaf ears,” the magistrate was told.

Mr Wanda admitted the charge and said: “I was annoyed by his behaviour. I wanted to teach him a lesson.”

Mr Wanda said his son was a notorious thief and that he had stolen from him and neighbours.

The prosecutor said the stepmother dashed out to look for help.

“Fortunately, she found police officers on patrol, who accompanied her to the home and arrested the accused,” said the prosecutor.

The police also told the man to take his son to hospital.

The prosecution asked that Mr Wanda be remanded at the Muthaiga Police Station while detectives gathered more information.

He will appear in court on July 14 for further directions from Resident Magistrate Agade.
