‘Daily Nation’ tops Google searches in Kenya

'Daily Nation' is the most searched news site in Kenya, according to latest internet data trends released by Google.

The annual Google Internet Zeitgeist report released Tuesday indicates Daily Nation topped the list of most searched news websites in the country in the last 12 months.

Nation.co.ke also features in the top 10 list of 'Top Searched News Sites' in Kenya, which has 'Daily Post' ranked second, followed by Goal.com and Standard Newspaper.

The general elections and the Westgate attack were the most searched events, according to the report which indicates what Kenyans were looking for online.

"The Westgate terror attack drew Kenyans online to search more information on the siege. In terms of the top trending events, the IEBC results and the Westgate attack topped the list," Google said in a statement.

Google notes that trending searches have the highest amount of traffic over a sustained period.

Kenyans were also more worried about ovulation, stress and nutrition as the three were ranked among the top searched health topics, with emergence of new searches on autism. Cancer and HIV/AIDs remained in the top ten queries.

Many Kenyans also searched on devolution, an indication that they want to learn more about the new system of governance.

Issues on policy, democracy, revolution, obamacare, security, nomination, Biometric Voter Registration (BVR), gubernatorial and county were also searched under the politics category.

According to Google, the Internet "Zeitgeist" (German for "the spirit of the times") is generated through the giant search engine's exploration of the over one trillion search queries received each year.
