Deadline set for degree course changes

What you need to know:

  • It means 170,408 students who scored C- and above were left out of government sponsored courses.
  • Kenyatta University will get the lion’s share of 5,942 students while Kirinyaga University College will get only 534.

Students who qualified to join public universities and colleges have until May 4 to revise their degree or diploma courses.

Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Services acting CEO John Muraguri said revising would be online.

He said cut-off points for placement under government sponsored programmes would be B of 60 for males and a B- of 58 for females.

“All candidates with a minimum overall grade of C- and above and who have not benefited from government sponsorship in the past are eligible to apply for diploma programmes,” Mr Muraguri said.

He added that applicants who met the cut-off points for placement to degree courses could also apply for diploma programmes of their choice, while those below the degree cut-off points but with a minimum of C- could only apply for diploma courses.

He advised those who did not secure chances in public institutions to seek admission in private ones.

The agency said 67,124 students would join public universities while 41,550 would be admitted to public colleges.

They will either pursue studies in private colleges and universities or go for parallel courses in public universities.

More than 483,630 students sat the 2014 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education examination with 149,717 scoring C+ and above. This year university admission is 67,124 compared to last year’s 57,250 while college admission increased to 41,550 from 36,995.

Kenyatta University will get the lion’s share of 5,942 students while Kirinyaga University College will get only 534.

Garissa University College which was attacked by terrorists will not get any student. Kenya Medical Training College will admit 4,860 students while Emining Technical Training Institute will get 120.

The situation could be complicated following a notice from the Commission of University Education barring universities from offering diploma and certificate courses.
