Ruto's Communications Secretary carjacked, as crime hits new highs

The Communications Secretary at the Office of the Deputy President David Mugonyi was on Tuesday night carjacked along Dennis Pritt road in Kilimani as the wave of crime sweeps across the city.

Nairobi County Police commander Benson Kibue said that Mr Mugonyi was waiting for his gate to be opened when four men confronted him, three of them armed with pistols.

He said they took control of his Toyota Prado and drove with him towards the city centre.

They later abandoned him at Mlolongo after robbing him of Sh22, 000 in cash and about Sh100,000 from his Mpesa account after forcing him at gun point to call his friends and tell them to send him money in his mobile phone.

The thugs also took off with Mr Mugonyi’s mobile phones.

Mr Kibue said the Communications Secretary was slightly injured on the face.

On the 13 of March 2013, police said they were looking for four men who carjacked President Uhuru Kenyatta’s aunt together with her passenger and dumped them on Peponi Road.

Two people were killed late January and at least 20 others injured when gangsters hijacked a bus on Thika road Nairobi, and drove it to Muhoho in Kiganjo, Gatundu South Sub-County, Kiambu before robbing its passengers.

KARIOBANGI SUSPECTS

Mr Kibue also said that police in Kariobangi shot dead a suspected robber and recovered a home-made firearm.

Three suspects had attacked a passenger who had alighted from a matatu at the Kariobangi roundabout.

Officers on patrol responded to a distress call by the passenger and shot dead one of the robbers as the rest escaped.
The city has witnessed a surge in carjacking, especially at the gates of residences.
