Cabinet Secretary Anne Waiguru has been awarded by an international business organisation for her leadership in spearheading the transition to devolution.

In awarding the Devolution and Planning Cabinet Secretary, the Middle East Africa Business Council (MEAFRIC) noted that Africa and “interested investors’’ recognised the unique challenges and opportunities that the new devolved system of government presented.

Ms Waiguru, they observed, had shown unique leadership as her ministry midwifed and coordinated devolution and blending efforts between the national and county governments to attain the same set goals.

Further, the organisers of the MEAFRIC Investment Roundtable and 2015 Awards, in its support to county governments, said the devolution ministry ultimately promotes and fostered trade and investment opportunities under a unique governance model “that would easily be replicated by other African countries.

“It is for this reason that we would like to recognise the efforts of the youthful and phenomenal woman leader,’’ said a statement from the council.

“This also provides a unique opportunity to also appreciate African Women’s contribution towards good governance, trade, investment and sustainable development on the international platform,’’ they added.

KAGAME, KENYATTA RECOGNISED

The council, an arm of the African Development Studies and Ras Al Khaimah-Africa Investment Management, also recognised President Uhuru Kenyatta and his Rwandan counterpart Paul Kagame as well as Nigerian businessman Alhaji Daliko Dangote in other categories.

The individual award to the minister adds another feather to her cap.

Huduma Kenya programme, which is implemented by her ministry, is this year’s winner of the United Nations Public Service Awards.

The Huduma programme was recognised for outstanding achievements in serving the public.

The United Nations Public Service Awards (UNPSA) is the most prestigious international recognition of excellence in public service. It rewards the creative achievements and contributions of public service institutions towards a more effective and responsive public administration worldwide.

The Devolution ministry has also won other awards for improving public service delivery such as the Customer Service Award, the ICT Excellency Award and the Africa Association for Public Administration and Management 2015 Award.

The Huduma Kenya Programme is expected to receive the award next month during the 2015 United Nations Public Service Awards ceremony to be held in Medellin, Colombia.
