Education CS Matiang'i unveils digital content for pupils

Digital content development for standard one and two pupils has been launched by the education ministry.
It includes interactive animations, videos and audio, cartoons, puppets exercises and quizzes aimed at helping pupils learn.
Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i launched the content of mathematics, science, social studies, English and Kiswahili at the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development in Nairobi on Tuesday.
The content will improve learning and teaching, according to the institute.
Dr Matiang’i said his ministry is working with other government institutions to ensure laptops for 1.2 million pupils in public schools are delivered.
Dr Matiang’i called on the private sector to join in developing more digital content.
“We welcome all players, including the Kenya Publishers Association, to help in content development. To Kenyan innovators and those in institutions of higher learning, this is your opportunity,” Dr Matiang’i said. He added that the institute would provide guidance on content development.
DIGITAL CONFERENCE
The CS also said that a conference on digital content development will be held in February in Nairobi.
“We want to modernise our education system so it can be accessed any time on digital platforms and enhance access to information,” he said.
Dr Matiang’i went on: “We want to prepare all the materials so our children can learn using modern methods in the 21st century.”
Education Principal Secretary Belio Kipsang, PS nominees for ICT Victor Kyalo and his vocational and technical training counterpart Dinah Mwinzi attended the event.
Other than development of digital content, teachers and staff delivering e-learning will be trained from February next year.
These will include those who will be developing graphics. This is to ensure they gain all the skills to pass on to pupils.
The institute is also developing content to suit pupils who are visually impaired and those with hearing difficulties.
The institution intends to analyse development of digital content for pupils in standard three to five in the five subjects between next year and 2017.
