A university lecturer was killed and five others injured as youths protested the shooting of a suspected gangster in Mombasa.

The mourners turned their wrath on the public shortly after they buried Hassan Nasrullah Musa, alias Guti, who was shot dead by men suspected to be police officers on Saturday afternoon on Mwembe Tayari Road.

After an overnight vigil in the 7-Up area of Majengo ya Mvita, where Musa lived, the youths took his body to Masjid Marembo for prayers, before burial at the nearby Kikowani Muslim cemetery.

Immediately after the burial, the mourners went on the rampage, attacking anybody they met on their way from Tononoka to Majengo.
In the ensuing violence, a university lecturer identified as Mr David Munga, was killed while five other victims were treated for panga and knife cuts at the Coast General Hospital.

Musa was suspected to be the leader of a gang operating in Majengo. He was due to stand trial for the alleged murder of Gadaffi Mohammed. He had been arrested together with another suspect, Irshad Abdulrahman, in July in connection with Mohammed’s death.

Witnesses said he was shot dead as he drove a saloon car. His wife, who was in the car with him, was shot in the leg and suffered facial injuries from broken glass.

TRAILED BY POLICE

It was not immediately clear whether Musa’s niece, who was also in the car, was hurt in the incident.

One of Musa’s cousins, who declined to be named, claimed that Musa had been trailed by police for some time before being shot at Arya Primary School.

Police had described Musa as a wanted man. They blamed him for numerous crimes allegedly committed by him or his gang.

During Sunday’s protests, the youths snatched money, mobile phones and other valuables from their victims.

According to medical staff at the Coast General Hospital, Mr Munga sustained serious lower torso knife injuries and died shortly after arrival at the hospital.

He was an electronic engineering lecturer at the Mombasa Technical Training Institute.

A photo of Mr Munga lying in a pool of blood went viral on social media.

A man who had attended Musa’s burial was among those who took Mr Munga to hospital.

“At the burial, we warned the youths not to cause any trouble. As I was walking, I saw someone being stabbed. I had to intervene and rush him to hospital,” the man, who requested not to be identified, said.

Among those injured was Mr Stanley Amunya, 39.

The father of four, who works as a driving instructor in Mombasa, sustained a deep cut in his left hand.

“I was parking on Jomo Kenyatta Road when 10 or 15 youths attacked me. They were armed with machetes, knives and rungus. They took away all my valuables, including phones, money and ID cards,” he said.
