Anti-corruption detectives have arrested three traffic police officers for allegedly taking bribes from motorists at the Kiminini Junction on the Eldoret–Kitale road.

Enoch Otiko, the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission deputy director in charge of the North Rift, on Friday said the officers were arrested with money collected from drivers.

TIP-OFF

Mr Otiko said the agency targeted the suspects following a tip from the public.

“We have been receiving complaints from the public about the behaviour of these …. Today we have arrested the three suspects,” said Mr Otiko.

He said one officer escaped but was being sought.

Addressing journalists at the EACC offices in Eldoret, Mr Otiko said the officers would be taken to court “as soon as possible”.

The law requires suspects to be presented in court within 24 hours of arrest.

BRIBERY

The officers were identified as Philip Kemboi, Wycliffe Wekesa and Eliud Cheruiyot, all based at Kitale Police Station.

Mr Otiko added that cases of bribery involving traffic police officers on the road had gone up over the last six months.

“We have received several complaints about corrupt police officers along this route. We have been gathering evidence, we even have video clips,” added Otiko

The director said the anti-graft body had stepped up its crackdown on bribe givers and takers along notorious routes in the North Rift.
