Anti-graft agency probes Joho's primary education

What you need to know:

  • Last month, the Kenya National Examinations Council said Mr Joho's secondary school certificate is a forgery.
  • Mr Joho denied forging a Form Four certificate to gain admission to university and described the claims as political propaganda.

The anti-corruption agency is investigating Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho’s primary school education background.

Anti-graft team officials visited Tom Mboya Primary School on Wednesday, seeking to establish whether Mr Joho sat the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education examination at the school.

The investigation is a new twist to Mr Joho’s woes that have seen him being investigated over claims he forged his high school examination certificate.

In a letter sent to Tom Mboya Primary School headteacher Suleiman Babu, the commission’s deputy chief executive Michael Mubea sought information on Mr Joho’s education.

ASKED FOR DOCUMENTS

“The commission is informed that Ali Hassan Joho was a pupil at Tom Mboya Primary School and sat for primary school examination some time on or about 1989,” says the letter dated March 28.

The commission asked for documents, including the school completion certificate, and what grades he obtained.

“Our officers will be available to collect the documents/information on or before April 5, 2017,” says the letter. On Wednesday, Mr Babu said the commission’s sleuths visited the school and requested that he submit a report by the afternoon.

“I am currently compiling the report they asked me to. I have to go through old files. When I am done, I will give you more details,” said Mr Babu.

On Wednesday, Mr Joho said no amount of intimidation would stop him.

INTIMIDATE HIM

Mr Joho said the investigation into his education was an attempt to intimidate and stop him from running for the governor’s post.

“I am aware that they have also launched a probe on my birth certificate, let them do so. If they want to get my marriage certificate, they should go ahead. But they will not take what rightfully belongs to me,” said Mr Joho last week.

After a two-hour grilling session at the Coast regional police headquarters last week, Mr Joho denied forging a Form Four certificate.

The governor said he was proud of his high school D- grade, which he obtained after sitting the examination in 1993.
