East African Standby Force to celebrate International Day of Peace

Defence Cabinet secretary Raychelle Omamo will on Wednesday lead the East African Standby Force (EASF) to celebrate International Day of Peace in Nairobi.

The day will kick off with a symbolic Peace Walk to demonstrate solidarity and support for peace in Eastern Africa and in Africa.

This will be followed by a donations to the ACK Good Samaritan Children’s Home in Karen, Nairobi, to demonstrate EASF's commitment to promoting peace and security besides caring for the well-being of the people of Eastern Africa.

Founded in 2004 as a standby army in line with the growing terrorism threats in the region, EASF comprises Burundi, Comoros, Djibouti, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Seychelles, Somalia, Sudan and Uganda.

Initially, it was formed as a single military component, the Eastern Africa Standby Brigade, but has since grown to include police and civilians hence the change of name.

DEVELOPING DOCTRINES

The body is now headed by H.E. Major General Abdulkadir Sheikh Ali Dini (Somalia) who is the Chairperson, Council of Ministers of Defence and Security.

It has its headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, that is made up of military and civilian staff on secondment from EASF Member States.  It serves as a command headquarters for force preparation and operational command of the Standby Force.

The secretariat is located in Nairobi and serves as the policy organ, structures and activities.

In an effort to achieve its Full Operational Capability, EASF has been engaged in developing doctrines, procedures, training manuals and other relevant documents to set the foundation and development for operationalization of the Force.

In the recent past EASF has embarked on intensive capacity building programmes especially for military, police and civilians.

This has helped create an encouraging level of integration and interoperability as the multidimensional force works together and interacts in various ways in pursuit of its mission mandate.
