What you need to know:

  • The institution closed all its campuses on December 8.
  • The students were protesting over new examinations rules, which they viewed as punitive.

Egerton University students who reside within the Njoro campus will pay Sh 5,122 each for destroying property during recent riots.

A notice signed by the Registrar of Academic Affairs, Prof Seth Owido, stated that foreign, disabled and off-campus students have been exempted from paying the damage fee.

The students have until January 5 to pay before they report back to class to sit their end-of-year examinations.

Students from the Nakuru Town, Baringo and Nairobi campuses who were affected by the university’s closure are also expected to report on January 5.

The examinations were deferred in early December after the students at the Njoro campus went on the rampage, destroying property worth millions of shillings. The institution’s business centre was set on fire during the riot.

Egerton closed all its campuses on December 8 following student protests over new examination rules, which they viewed as punitive.

One of the rules barred students with fee arrears from sitting for their examinations.
