EXTREME POVERTY

Those who will get the money include 164,000 people aged above 65 years living in extreme poverty. Another 27,000 people with severe disabilities will also get paid.

Up to 253,000 orphans and more than 10,000 households receive food subsidies in urban areas.

They all get Sh2,000 every month, but the elderly have been complaining that the stipend, started in 2012, is too little.

The President also asked employers to ensure their employees make contributions to health and retirement schemes.

Labour Cabinet Secretary Kazungu Kambi, whose ministry is in charge of the payments, said there were plans to elevate it to a revolving fund to ensure it is sustainable.
