US envoy Robert Godec challenges State to end food insecurity

US Ambassador to Kenya Robert Godec has challenged the government to come up with a permanent solution to drought-related disasters.

He said it is vital for the country to build resilience among communities by supporting food-for-assets projects to make people self-reliant.

“What is important is not the constant emergencies and how to respond to those emergencies. We have to help the people work hard so that they do not need help when there are disasters because they have become strong and resilient,” he said.

He said such efforts will address food insecurity and end dependence on relief food.

“The most important thing is for us to work together for a longer term and better future,” he said at Galamani Small Irrigation Scheme in Hola, Tana River County, on Tuesday.

The envoy said the US and Kenyan governments will continue to work together on projects aimed at mitigating the effects of drought.

“That is why I will particularly look for ways to help with food-for-assets and other ways that will help you build your communities,” he said.

Mr Godec, who was accompanied by Tana River Governor Hussein Dado and County Commissioner Isaiah Nakoru, lauded humanitarian agencies, especially the World Food Programme and the Kenya Red Cross Society, for assisting those affected by the prolonged dry spell.
