A former magazine publisher has sued the government for alleged harassment and torture during President Moi’s regime.

Mr Pius Nyamora and and his wife, Loyce, who published Society magazine, claim that their rights were grossly violated by security officers, prison warders and other government agents and are demanding compensation.

They claimed that in a raid on January 5, 1992, armed policemen seized 30,000 copies and artwork for their publication that featured a cover photograph of President Moi resting his chin on his palm with the headline: "The cost of killing Ouko".

ARROW OF GOD

Another raid seized 10,000 copies of an edition that had an article about the Shifta menace in northern Kenya, and later, one titled "Arrow of God", which touched on Yellow Fever in parts of Rift Valley.

They told High Court judge Isaac Lenaola on Wednesday that they were roughed up and detained at Shimo la Tewa Prison in Mombasa and other places for allegedly running a seditious publication.

Mr Nyamora was the publisher, director and editor of the magazine while his wife took care of their city home.
