Operating under the Swiftmed Kenya banner, the doctors yesterday launched Step by Step Campaign that will screen around 20,000 women for the disease and fully treat 50 who are found to be suffering from it. All the medical services will be offered free of charge.

Dr Nelly Bosire, a gynaecologist, who is in charge of the campaign, said statistics show that to get 50 people suffering from cervical cancer, around 20,000 need to be screened.

“We will, however, provide treatment even if the people with a positive diagnosis go beyond the expected 50,” she said.

The screening will take place in July in Migori while treatment for those found to be suffering from the disease will begin in September, said Dr Bosire.

“We will operate on them from Migori then later in October transfer them to Nairobi, to the Texas Cancer Centre, where they will receive follow-up treatment as well as chemotherapy and radiotherapy,” she said.

Step by Step Campaign will take place in different counties every year. The initiative hopes to raise funds from the public and corporates.

In addition, a group of five men will walk from Migori to Mombasa from May 10 to June 12 to raise awareness and funds for the initiative.
