Five people died early Wednesday morning in a road crash at King'ee area on the Nairobi-Mombasa highway.

The crash, that involved a truck and a bus, occurred at 1 a.m.

Police say 23 other people were injured and were treated at Sultan Hamud sub-county hospital.

According to the hospital’s Medical Superintendent Dickson Tukei, three victims were transferred to hospitals in Nairobi for specialised treatment.

Salama acting police boss Mr Joseph Nyasili said the driver of the bus was among those killed in the crash.

In a statement, the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) Director General Francis Meja said the truck, that was heading to Nairobi, was overtaking and collided with the bus belonging to the Chania Cool Sacco.

“The two vehicles collided as the truck was trying to overtake and as a result the driver of the bus lost control and the vehicle landed into a ditch. The driver, two male and two female passengers died on the spot,” he said.

He said a team of NTSA officers were dispatched to the scene and the Authority will issue a statement on their findings.

The bus was heading to Mombasa.
