Former GSU officer linked to terror arrested in Mombasa

A former General Service Unit (GSU) officer linked to terrorism was arrested Friday morning in Mombasa County.

The former policeman, identified as Constable Joseph Kariuki, was arrested at 1am by officers led by the Anti-Terrorism Police Unit.

The former officer was arrested at a guest house in Ganjoni, Mvita.

Mombasa County Criminal Investigations Officer Hussein Bakari said the suspect deserted duty and had been on the run.

“The (former) officer is attached to Ruiru Recce Company and was wanted for terror-related offences and recovery of cache of weapons in Ruiru,” said Mr Bakari.

Mr Bakari said Mr Kariuki was one of the suspects being sought over three AK-47 rifles, 178 rounds of ammunition and nine AK-47 rifle magazines seized a bridge in Ruiru.

Police later raided the house of another former Recce Unit officer, identified as Constable Eric Ngethe Kanyigi, in Githurai 45, Nairobi, but found no weapons.

Mr Kanyigi, who is also on the run, deserted duty in 2014.

The two officers are believed to be Al-Shabaab sympathisers and were targeting the GSU Recce unit headquarters in Ruiru.
