Four police officers deny role in Sh2.7m robbery

Four police officers and three civilians who were on Monday charged with Sh2.7 million robbery will be detained until Wednesday pending further investigations.

One of the officers is believed to be the daughter of a senior Administration Police commander.

The officers—Mr Simon Mwaniki, Mr Kennedy Kobia, Mr Isaiah Kimani and Ms Eunice Wanjiku Mburu—and civilians Maurice Odhiambo, Janet Cheptoo and Ezra Kipngeno denied the charges when they appeared before Limuru senior resident magistrate Karen Njalale.

The prosecution then applied to be allowed to detain the seven for more days to facilitate further investigations.

GAMBLING

The seven are said to have robbed Mr Wuwei Dun, a Chinese who runs a gambling business in Nairobi.

According to the charge sheet, the seven, jointly with others not in court, robbed Mr Dun of the cash and a mobile phone valued at Sh50,000 on Friday at Rironi on the Nairobi-Naivasha road in Kiambu.

They are also said to have robbed Mr Dun of the ignition keys of his vehicle  and his passport.

Mr Dun, 45, told the police that as he was heading to Nakuru with Ms Cheptoo, who was the driver, and Mr Kipngeno, their car was blocked by another vehicle and four occupants armed with pistols disembarked and robbed them of Sh2.7 million and their phones before speeding away towards Nairobi.

INTERROGATED

After a police report was made, Ms Cheptoo and Mr Kipngeno were put into custody and interrogated over the incident.

On Sunday, officers from the Flying Squad arrested the four police officers in different parts of the country and put them into custody.

They recovered some cash, believed to have been part of the loot, from the four officers.

Mr Mwaniki is an AP constable based at the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in Chepalungu Division, Bomet County.

HANDCUFFS

He is said to have been found in Nairobi with Sh100,000, the vehicle used in the robbery and a pair of handcuffs.

Ms Wanjiku is an AP officer with the DCI, Central Police Station, Nairobi. She was allegedly found with Sh95,000 at her house in Shauri Moyo.

Mr Kobia is a Kenya Police constable with the Anti-Mugging Squad, Nairobi.

He is said to have deposited some Sh100,000 in his account and was found in his Gachie Estate house with a pistol and seven rounds of ammunition.

Mr Kimani, a police constable with the DCI, Kikuyu, was arrested at his Kilimani police lines house. He was allegedly found with Sh150,000.
