Police are searching for a gang that killed an officer, shot a cobbler and hijacked motorcycles and cars after robbing a bank in Kitengela Town, Kajiado County, on Saturday.

In less than 30 minutes, the gangster had shot two people and hijacked three motorcycles and three cars as they escaped from the bank and a crowd that tried to corner them.

A police officer who spotted some members of the five-man gang near a supermarket fired a warning shot in the air.

But one of the robbers shot the law enforcer in the back. He was taken to the Kitengela Sub-District Hospital, where he died.

The police officer, who was tasked with guarding a Standard Chartered Bank branch, was on his way back from a lunch break. His colleague was injured in the ensuing shootout.

According to a report of the incident at Vigilance House, some members of the gang entered the EPZ branch of Transnational Bank at 2.10pm and posed as customers waiting to open an account.

They later drew pistols and ordered the staff to lie down. One of them jumped over a counter and went to the strong-room, where he took Sh4.8 million and another took Sh300,000 from a teller.

As they escaped from the scene in a getaway car, the gangsters encountered the police officer near a supermarket. There was a shootout with another police officer.

But a crowd pursued them, and a cobbler who tried to stop them was shot in the chest.

Their car rammed a matatu, injuring two passengers.

ABANDONED CAR

The gangsters then grabbed a boda boda and escaped towards the Kitengela Slaughterhouse, where they abandoned the motorbike and hijacked a car.

They drove a short distance, abandoned the vehicle and hijacked another motorbike. They rode it for a short distance and abandoned it.

The robbers seized another car and on reaching Afya Sacco, they abandoned it.

They then hijacked a third motorcycle.

Kajiado County Commander Joel Langat said the police were still pursuing the robbers in Koroboi, near Isinya Town.

He urged the public to volunteer information they may have.
