A tearful sendoff for lawyer found dead in swimming pool

Mourners at Saturday’s funeral of Nairobi lawyer Geoffrey Oriaro, who was found dead in a swimming pool at a Mombasa hotel, demanded further investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death.

They said the sudden death “cannot be left just like that”. Family, colleagues and friends gathered at Konya village in Ugenya constituency said the matter should be expedited to end speculation regarding the death.

Mrs Elizabeth Ochola, the widow, said she was still in shock after losing her greatest friend.She said her only strength was the children the late lawyer left behind.

She said: “He was an angel who has now made me understand that good people have nothing to do here on earth.” “He created jobs for many people. He was there for his family and was keen on education as a component of development,” she said.

Ugenya MP David Ochieng’ said the fact that the lawyer died barely six months after he filed a petition to oust Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) bosses.

“We hope his death was natural. We want the authorities to establish the cause of death,” said Mr Ochieng’.The legislator said the legal fraternity had lost a brave mind that stood for the cause of justice for Kenyans regardless of their class in society.

“Mr Oriaro has helped many people in the short time he lived,” said Mr Ochieng’.

Lawyer Oriaro was found dead at Beach Seafront Chalet Hotel, Mombasa, on August 19. Employees at the hotel said Oriaro’s body was found in the swimming pool. Mr Oriaro was among lawyers who had attended a conference at Leisure Lodge Hotel in Diani.

He was known for his successful petition for Parliament to remove EACC chairman Mumo Matemu and his deputy Irene Keino. He also handled various land cases.

The lawyer was given a tearful sendoff which saw hundreds of his friends gather to witness his departure.

Law Society of Kenya members and officials from Kenya Prisons were in attendance to support the family.
