  • With their belongings and shelter gone, the family now must struggle to find another place to call home.

Violet Maria Nzomo, aged four years, might not know why she is admitted in Kenyatta National Hospital, but she and her mother are some of the lucky tenants who survived the Friday collapse of a building in Nairobi's Huruma.

She suffered serious injuries to the head and right eye.

Her aunt, who does not give her name, sits by her bedside as she recounts the events of the fateful day that, as of Monday, has left 22 dead and 138 rescued.

“I received a call from my brother (Maria’s father) on Friday, telling me to go to his house to see what was happening. He was away and had heard that a building had collapsed,” she recollects.

When she got to the scene, she could not find her sister-in-law or niece, who had been the only ones at home. Maria’s brother was upcountry. The mother and daughter were later rescued and taken to the hospital.

With their belongings and shelter gone, the family now must struggle to find another place to call home.
