Githu Muigai declares war on copyright law violators

Attorney-General Githu Muigai on Friday said he would collaborate with Inspector-General David Kimaiyo to ensure copyrights are protected to enhance economic growth.

Prof Muigai pledged government support to grow the creative industry through funding and enforcement of laws safeguarding works of art.

He was speaking during the National Copyright Awareness Day organised by the Copyright Society, Multi Choice and Microsoft at KICC in Nairobi.

The function saw the official launch of World Intellectual Property Organisation and the Coastal Data Information Programme by the Kenya Copyright Board.

Board chairman Tom Mshindi said they would ensure copyright licences were issued to valid holders, and urged them to know their rights and protect their products.

He said the board would create awareness and educate the public on importance copyrights, which entitle holders to benefit from their works.

Mr Mshindi said adherence to copyright laws would see many jobs created for the youth. He called on the government to train police to enable them better protect intellectual property rights.

Director of Microsoft Anti-Piracy East and Central Africa Daniel Kamau said the company would do away with the Microsoft XP by April next year and replace it with another version.

Present at the event were Sports, Culture and the Arts Principal Secretary Patrick Omutia, Multi Choice General Director Dan Muchira and Kenya Copyright Board Director Marisella Ouma, among others.
