The former chief registrar of the Judiciary, Mrs Gladys Boss Shollei, has denied irregularly buying a house for the Chief Justice.

Mrs Shollei was on Monday charged with improperly conferring a Sh310 million benefit to Johnson Nduya Muthama Holdings Limited, the company from which the palatial building in Runda, Nairobi, was bought.

She was also charged with wilful failure to comply with the law on managing public funds as the Judiciary’s accounting officer, and engaging in the project without prior planning.

She is charged alongside her former deputy Kakai Kissinger and five former members of the Judiciary’s tender committee who approved the transaction.

Mr Kissinger, Mr Martin Okwatta, Mr Benedict Omollo, Mr Wycliffe Wanga, Mr Thomas Oloko Atak and Mr Nicholas Mbeba answered to similar charges on August 5.

SH600,000 BAIL

On that date, Mrs Shollei was said to be out of the country.

They all denied engaging in a project without prior planning, failing to comply with the law on tendering and going against the evaluation committee's recommendation to choose the lowest bidder.

All the suspects, including Ms Shollei, have been released on a Sh600,000 cash bail each with an alternative Sh1.5 million bond.

Ms Shollei’s lawyer, Mr Paul Ng’arua, has appealed for lenient bond terms, saying his client has been out of work since her sacking by the Judicial Service Commission in 2013.

The case will be mentioned on September 7, when a hearing date will be fixed.
