Go for funds, Waiguru tells women, youth

A Cabinet Secretary has challenged women and youth to apply for revolving funds to start their businesses.

Only Sh2 billion out of Sh5.3 billion has been disbursed to groups, Devolution and Planning minister Anne Waiguru said.

“Although Sh4.2 billion has been disbursed, only Sh2 billion is in the pockets of women and youth. This is because most of them have not been trained on how to invest the money since they have to pay back. Some have not formed groups,” Ms Waiguru told the Nation on the sidelines of a Kenya Women Parliamentarians Association meeting held in Nairobi on Tuesday night.

AFFIRMATIVE ACTION

She revealed that a total of Sh180 million had been disbursed to Kisumu County. “Other main beneficiaries are Meru County, where I have personally given cheques to some recipients, and Kiambu County,” she added.

Ms Waiguru also said they had encountered hitches in allocating a third of tenders to women.

“The main problem is that the affirmative action to empower women is just a policy and not a law, we want to take it to Parliament so that it can be made law,” the CS said.
