Gold coin to mark Kenya@50

What you need to know:

  • The coin, which is the size of the Sh20 silver coin, has the coat of arms on the face of it, with the inscription Republic of Kenya at the top and the same words “Jamhuri ya Kenya” in the national language, Kiswahili. Slightly below the court of arms is also the inscription “50 shillings.”

A sparkling commemorative gold coin is part of the Kenya@50 celebrations.

The gold coin, made by the Central Bank of Kenya, was unveiled Monday at the Kenyatta International Conference Centre in Nairobi, by President Kenyatta and his deputy William Ruto.

Central Bank governor Njuguna Ndung’u pointed out that the gold coin was only commemorative and would not be in circulation.

“Central Bank plans to contribute to Kenya’s 50 years of independence by offering a gold coin,” Prof Ndung’u said.

The coin, which is the size of the Sh20 silver coin, has the coat of arms on the face of it, with the inscription Republic of Kenya at the top and the same words “Jamhuri ya Kenya” in the national language, Kiswahili. Slightly below the court of arms is also the inscription “50 shillings.”

FLAG EMBOSSED

At the back of the coin, above the map of Kenya, are embossed the words “Fifty years of independence”.

Inside the map are the words “Kenya 1963-2013”. The flag of Kenya is embossed on the map, with the translation in Kiswahili, Miaka Hamsini ya Uhuru, at the bottom.
