Governors on Wednesday dismissed the findings of an EACC survey which showed alarming levels of sleaze in counties.

Kisii County boss James Ongwae described the report as unfair “as it does not reflect the actual position on the ground”.

Kisii was ranked third in the survey released on Tuesday by EACC Chairman Philip Kinisu.

In Embu, MCAs demanded a lifestyle audit on executives after the county was ranked second.

Runyenjes Central Ward Rep Steve Simba said MCAs believed officials were looting to finance their campaigns at the expense of development.

Addressing the assembly, Mr Simba called for the dismissal of county officers eyeing elective posts.

In Kwale, Governor Salim Mvurya told EACC to explain the criterion used in listing and determining corruption levels in counties.

He wanted to know why the findings were not shared with county officials. The county was fourth.

“Since I took over as governor in 2013, I have never been summoned by EACC. No single official has been summoned by any investigative agency over corruption,’’ he told journalists.

In Garissa, Governor Nathif Jama through his spokesman Yussuf Kurow said the devolved government was free from corruption and would not tolerate any malpractice.

He said anyone with evidence of corruption should report the cases to relevant authorities.

Mr Kurow said corruption claims against the devolved unit had been politicised and asked EACC to carry its investigations without interference from any quarter.

Balambala MP Abdikadir Aden urged EACC to prosecute the governor “for overseeing impunity and looting of resources instead of telling us which county tops in corruption”.
