The government has set up a team to assess all national and county staff in the public sector by November with a view to redeploying, transferring, training or retrenching them.

The team will have representation from the Public Service Commission, the Salaries and Remuneration Commission, the Council of Governors and the Union of Kenya Civil Servants.

"The current dispensation has made it imperative to realign structures, processes, programmes, institution and staffing to core mandates of the governments at the national and county level," noted a joint press statement signed by the Devolution Cabinet Secretary Anne Waiguru and representatives of the organisations.

"The rationalisation exercise will involve carrying out capacity assessment, restructuring, undertaking human resource and skills audit, staff redeployment and transfers, where necessary after capturing and analysing biometric data," it said.

A similar exercise is being conducted for all employees of State corporations. The results of the programme are expected to be implemented in the next financial year as part of the public service reform agenda.
