Man finds grenades in a cemetery

What you need to know:

  • Mr Muktar Ahmed found the five F1 Russian-made grenades at the Ahmed Liban Cemetery.
  • In 2011, a cache of arms was found in the same cemetery.

A widower on Wednesday stumbled on grenades stashed away in a graveyard where his wife was buried on the outskirts of Wajir town.

Mr Muktar Ahmed found the five F1 Russian-made grenades at the Ahmed Liban Cemetery.

Police had earlier issued an alert to locals over an impending attack as Muslims celebrated Idd-Ul-Fitr.

Mr Ahmed informed a chief who reported the matter to the police. Anti-terrorist officers took the grenades to Wajir Police Station.

INTELLIGENCE REPORTS

County police commandant David Kirui said they received intelligence reports of a possible raid at a religious gathering during Idd festivities and deployed security officers at possible targets.

As a result, there was a heavy police presence around the main mosque in the town while Muslims celebrated the end of Ramadhan.

Mr Kirui said investigations are underway, but no one has been arrested so far.

In 2011, a cache of arms was found in the same cemetery. Police said it was on transit to a destination that they did not specify.

Residents say criminals frequently use the cemetery because it is isolated.
