Unknown gunmen shot dead Mombasa businessman Shahid Butt minutes after he had picked up his son from Moi International Airport, Mombasa.

The businessman was killed at the Korna Chaani area in Changamwe Constituency on Friday evening.

His business partner, Mr Sakim Sumra, said Mr Butt left his office at Mwembe Tayari and picked up his son from the airport but was shot after he stopped to make way for a motorcyclist.

He said Mr Butt’s car had more than 20 bullet holes and his son was not injured.

Mombasa County police commander Robert Kitur said Mr Butt stopped for a motorcycle rider to pass when gunmen in a vehicle struck.

SLOW RESPONSE

Mr Kitur said the assailants fired shots at the businessman’s car then drove away to a nearby petrol station, where they shot and injured a man and his 3-year-old son.

He wondered why it took security personnel several hours to get to the scene yet it was a few metres from a police station.

“We are saddened and perturbed. The incident occurred two minutes’ walk from the Changamwe police station and a few kilometres from the airport yet no security personnel arrived,” he said.

Mr Sumra asked the government to investigate and arrest those behind the murder.

“We are confused about the insecurity, we are asking politely the (County) Commissioner Mr Nelson Marwa and anyone in the security docket to act," he said.
