Knut acting secretary- general Mudzo Nzili has asked chairman Wilson Sossion to officially hand over his resignation letter by Tuesday for the union to appoint his replacement.

Mr Nzili, who will battle it out with Mr Sossion for the Kenya National Union of Teachers secretary-general position in the December polls, said the union’s administrative structures are well laid-down such that when a member resigns, then the first vice-chairperson immediately takes over in an acting capacity.

‘‘If Mr Sossion is a serious contender, then he should have officially written to the secretary-general to make the teaching fraternity aware that he has resigned from his position,’’ said Mr Nzili.

On Saturday, Mr Sossion said that he had resigned from his position of chairman to vie for the post of secretary-general. He made the announcement during the Bureti Knut branch AGM in Kericho County, a decision that did not go well with teachers from Nyanza and Siaya, who had vowed to support Mr Nzili.

Kisumu West Knut chairman Edward Olando criticised Mr Sossion’s move, saying: ‘‘We are not happy with his decision since this was just a by-election to confirm the person who has been acting as the secretary general.

“He should have remained patient for only two and half years to allow Mr Nzili to deliver his duties as per the Knut tradition.’’

According to Mr Nzili, Knut tradition dictates that the secretary-general seat goes to Coast, Nyanza or Nairobi while the chairman position is reserved for Western, Central and Rift Valley.

But Mr Sossion said he was reacting to pressure from teachers to vacate the office of the national chairman and vie for the secretary-general seat.

Mr Sossion even called on Mr Nzili to reconsider his decision and run for the position of chairman but he vowed to battle it out during the December polls.
