Heroes from each county to be feted

A hero and heroine from each of the 47 counties will receive an award during this year’s Mashujaa Day celebrations on October 20.

Sports, Culture and Arts Cabinet Secretary Hassan Wario on Tuesday said 20 sportspersons would also be recognised during the occasion to be held at the Nyayo National Stadium in Nairobi.

“A hero and heroine have been chosen from each of the 47 counties and they will be among the fellow Kenyans who will gather at Nyayo Stadium for the Mashujaa Day celebrations,” Dr Wario said.

Besides freedom fighters and sportspersons, the CS said “people who have done Kenya proud in various fields such as research, medicine, art, human rights activism will also be honoured”.

He appealed to Kenyans to come out in large numbers on Tuesday next week “to celebrate our heroes and heroines who have commendable contributions to our nation”.

He appealed to Nairobi residents to go to Nyayo Stadium, where the event will be presided over by President Uhuru Kenyatta.

The CS warned the public against the destruction of monuments and statutes erected in various parts of the country.

“Here in Nairobi, Gor Mahia FC fans have been climbing and destroying the Tom Mboya monument outside the National Archives. That is being unpatriotic,” he said.

Dr Wario also said that a Mashujaa council, charged with identifying Kenyans who have made significant contributions to the nation, would be formed.
