Kenya’s popular religious radio station Hope FM’s frequency was on Tuesday night infiltrated by unknown people, sparking uproar on social media as Kenyans expressed their shock.
Listeners said the radio went off air for a few minutes before Islamic prayers could be heard playing. Shortly afterwards, the radio went off air from 11pm.
A government cybercrime expert, who is not authorized to speak to the press, confirmed that the frequency was indeed compromised.
“It’s been hijacked and they are playing their own content on the station,” he said, adding that it was not a frequency overlap.
Hope FM officials could not be reached on the studio lines for a comment.
The social media community was abuzz with comments on the incident.
The station is back on the air.
