Over 800,000 women in five counties delivered and received antenatal care at health facilities for a mere Sh200 before free maternity care was introduced in 2013.

Women from poor families in Kiambu, Kisumu, Kitui, Kilifi and Nairobi’s Korogocho and Viwandani slums accessed antenatal care, delivery, postnatal care and medical care for their newborns for six days through a subsidised voucher system, Health Cabinet Secretary James Macharia said.

This was made possible through a Kenya-German partnership which targeted women from poor backgrounds.

The beneficiaries redeemed the vouchers for specific maternal health services.

Mr Macharia spoke Wednesday in Nairobi when he opened a workshop where findings of the Reproductive Health Vouchers Project were released.

Head of German Development Cooperation Lars Wilke said the vouchers complemented the government’s free maternity care.
