Rescue efforts at the site of the collapsed residential building in Huruma, Nairobi, have officially ended Saturday evening after nine days with 49 people confirmed dead, 47 reported missing and 140 rescued.

The search team also rescued domestic animals including nine rabbits, one turkey, two geese and two cats from the rubble.

No further information has been released about those reported missing, specifically whether their bodies have not been identified from among the dead or if they may still be under the rubble.

However, the site still remains under police protection as investigation continues.

“The site is a prohibited area and it is not open to the public until the investigation is complete,” said Mr Pius Masai, the deputy director National Disaster Management Unit.
