A policeman killed his former girlfriend and a senior GSU officer when he found them in a bar in Meru County. The officer then turned the pistol on himself during the Sunday night incident.

Constable Joseph Kipng’etich collected a Ceska pistol from work, claiming that he was going for patrol duties at about 11pm, but instead walked into a bar at Mutuati Market in Igembe North, where he shot and killed Constable Grace Sheila Kioko and the Kinisa GSU camp boss, Chief Inspector Benson Mwadime, who was with her.

FELT BAD

Igembe North police boss Cornelius Sing’oei said the killer officer was based at the Laare Police Station.

On the ill-fated night, he went to Club Tenax in Mutuati, where he committed the murders before turning the weapon on himself.

“He might have felt bad after he found the woman with another officer who had started a relationship with her,” said Mr Sing’oei.

Mr Peter Waruru, a witness, said other patrons in the bar ran out in panic when the shots rang out.

“We didn’t know exactly what was going on and we thought Al-Shabaab had come to attack us,” said Mr Waruru.

UNFOLDED QUICKLY

The patrons only went back to find out what had happened after police arrived at the scene and identified the bodies as those of their colleagues.

The bodies were moved to the Meru Teaching and Referral Hospital mortuary.

Mr Lazaro Ngolo, the owner of the bar, said the incident unfolded very quickly.

“The officer came and did not talk to anyone. He drew his pistol and started shooting at the two before shooting himself,” he said.

Ms Grace Ciamaroo, who lives in Mutuati, said the incident was shocking and she could not imagine that a police officer could attack his colleagues.

“Women are many in this world, why should one kill someone because of a woman and worse still, end his own life?” she asked.

In January, an Administration Police officer shot and killed his girlfriend at a bar at Kianjai Market, in the same county. The couple were drinking at the bar when the officer shot the woman, killing her instantly.

In 2010, another Administration Police officer killed 10 people in Siakago Town in the neighbouring Embu County, in the region’s worst killing spree involving a police officer.

The AP is believed to have been enraged by his girlfriend, whom he suspected of infidelity.
