The eight national officials, led by the secretary-general Sheikh Mohamed Dor, agreed that Sheikh Ateka, who was the vice-chair, takes over until elections.

“We have decided to fill the position after mourning our departed colleague,” said Sheikh Dor, who spoke at their Mwembe Tayari headquarters Sunday.

“As the national office-bearers, we have decided to elevate Sheikh Ateka as our new interim national chairman as per our constitution until official elections,” he added.

However, the CIPK national executive council remained mum over who will take up the vice-chairman’s post. The secretary-general’s office is also vacant after Sheikh Dor was appointed Kenya’s ambassador to Muscat, Oman.

Some of the members are reportedly demanding a special meeting to fill the vacant positions.

South Coast CIPK chairman Sheikh Amir Banda, who spoke to the Nation, wants to know how the two offices will operate. “Most of us remain in the dark,” he lamented.
