The Industrial Court on Monday revoked a legal notice published by Labour Cabinet Secretary Kazungu Kambi removing workers’ and employers’ representatives from the National Social Security Fund (NSSF) board of trustees.

Lady Justice Monica Mbaru lifted the notice pending the hearing and determination of a case filed by the Central Organisation Trade Unions (Cotu) and its secretary general Francis Atwoli.

In the legal notice, Mr Kambi had removed Mr Atwoli and Federation of Kenya Employers (FKE) chief executive Ms Jacqueline Mugo from the board.

ACTIVIST CHALLENGES REMOVAL

At the same time, an activist sued in another court to challenge Mr Kambi’s decision.

Mr Charles Omanga filed a case at the High Court to challenge the move by the Labour CS.

Mr Kambi’s decision has drawn wide criticism, with Cotu threatening to call a strike unless the decision is reversed.

Teachers and political leaders also sharply criticised the move, describing it as irregular and intended to cover corruption at the pensions fund, which manages more than Sh126 billion of retirement savings for workers in both the private and public sectors.
