Police are holding an Insurance firm manager after a motorist was shot dead in a road rage incident in Nairobi at the weekend.

A second motorist is admitted at the city’s MP Shah hospital after he sustained a bullet wound in the back during the 1am incident on Naivasha road in Dagoretti.

Head of Criminal Investigations in Dagoretti Joseph Ondoro said the motorist died after he was shot twice in the abdomen and arm.

“He was licensed to carry a firearm which we have already confiscated. We are investigating an incident of road rage and we are hoping to speak to other people who might have seen what happened,” he said.

The man in custody was identified as Fredrick Mwangi who works for the ICEA Lion Group, according to the police.

Mr Francis Ambudo who died from gunshot injuries was identified as a mechanic.

The manager told police that he fired at “carjackers,” who had used their vehicle to block his way and feared they would rob and harm him.
Preliminary investigations showed that minutes before the shooting, the victims were riding in a car that almost collided with another which was being driven by the manager, near Nakumatt Junction on Ngong Road.

A car chase ensued as each driver attempted to block the other.

Occupants of both cars are said to have shouted insults at each other before they stopped near Melzedek, each on either side of the road.

The manager was driving a Toyota Corolla while the victims were in a Mitsubishi Pajero.

Mr Ondoro said detectives would visit a nearby bar where the survivor said they had been having drinks hours earlier.

Investigators spent five hours at the scene trying to reconstruct the account, with a view of establishing if the shooting was justified.
