The national civilian police watchdog has asked University of Nairobi students who were clobbered and injured by police last week not to leave before they record statements with the authority.
The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (Ipoa) made the appeal on Tuesday after UoN was closed indefinitely “due to the deteriorating security situation”.

There have been concerns and complaints from Kenyans, human rights groups and political leaders that the police deployed to quell chaos during a demo at the university on Thursday used excessive force against the students.
Demonstrations started when Embakasi East MP, who was also a long serving student leader at the university, was arrested and charged with subversion.
Upon release on a Sh500,000 bail, he was arrested again and charged with causing grievous harm to a voter during the August 8 general elections.
Police have been accused of entering classes and dormitories, beating and torturing peaceful university students who were not involved in the pro-Owino demos.
