Poor voter turnout and bribery claims on Saturday marred Jubilee Party primaries for the Kericho senatorial by-election.

The situation was blamed on the late opening of polling stations across constituencies.

There was also confusion on whether the nominations would take place on Saturday or on Tuesday, a situation blamed on poor communication by JAP’s organisers.

Some contestants complained of massive voter bribery.

Contestant Sammy Chepkwony raised concern about late opening of polling centres, especially in Kipkelion East Constituency.

He said that he received information that Chepseon Pimary School, Kibyemite Primary School and Ngatumek polling centres in Kipkelion East had not been opened by 9 am because there were no ballot boxes and papers.

“This is a huge concern to our campaign team because Kipkelion East is our stronghold,” he said.

Contestant Aron Cheruiyot complained of  a mix-up in the voter register. He cited Kaborok Primary in Belgut  as one centre affected by this. He also complained of delayed opening of some polling stations.
