A director at the Kigali campus of Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) allegedly behind the disappearance of more than Sh20 million has been sacked.

Anthony Luvanda was sent packing after failing to account for the money that was collected from students in Rwanda, where he was serving as the campus’ coordinator.

“This is to inform the public that the above person is no longer an employee of JKUAT as from April 13,” said Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration) Victoria Ngumi.

Mr Luvanda’s case has since been handed over to the police for investigations.

The university is under investigation by the National Assembly’s Public Investment Committee for setting up a campus in Rwanda without seeking the government’s approval.

The committee, chaired by Eldas MP Adan Keynan, launched investigations into how the university invested millions of shillings in setting up campuses in Rwanda and Tanzania after the Commission for University Education denounced their investment.

JKUAT invested Sh10 million in the Arusha centre and Sh21 million for the Kigali campus.

According to Vice-Chancellor Mabel Imbuga, the Arusha centre currently has 328 students while Kigali has 1,822 students.

Prof Imbuga has defended the decision to put up the campuses, saying this would fill the skills gap.

The vice-chancellor maintained that by having two government representatives, one from the Treasury and the other from the Education ministry, on its council the plan had received the government’s approval.
