Turkana Senator John Munyes on Tuesday underwent an operation to remove a bullet from his body after he was shot by his bodyguard on Sunday.

Doctors at Nairobi Hospital said Mr Munyes was in stable condition in spite of having had the bullet in his body for two days.

In-patient coordinator Louise Lwai-Lume said the senator had to undergo a thorough check before the operation.

Dr Lwai-Lume, however, did not disclose where the bullet was lodged, saying this was confidential information.

Tongaren MP Eseli Simiyu, who visited the senator in hospital on Tuesday, said that the shooting was “an accident”.

Senate Speaker Ekwe Ethuro said the matter would be dealt with once Mr Munyes had recovered.

Mr Munyes was shot in the hip on Sunday just minutes after driving off from a meeting with leaders from Ethiopia to discuss peace building.

Reports indicate that he was seated next to the driver while the bodyguard was in the back seat.

On reaching Loarengak in Turkana North, it is claimed the bodyguard’s gun discharged accidentally and the bullet ricocheted off the floor of the car and hit the senator’s left hip.

The fate of the bodyguard, who is said to be Mr Munyes’ cousin, is still unclear.
