The Kenya National Examinations Council got a new chief executive on Wednesday.

He is Dr Joseph Kivilu.

The chairman of the council, Prof Kabiru Kinyanjui, announced the appointment in Nairobi.

Dr Kivilu has been acting since the former boss, Mr Paul Wasanga, left in April.

Others who had been eyeing the post were Dr Joel Mabonga and Dr Diana Mwinzi.

Dr Kivilu assumes office at a time when the exams body is facing major challenges, in particular, cheating in the ongoing Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education examination.

Addressing a press conference, Dr Kivilu said he would fight the vice.

However, he said that cases of cheating had significantly dropped compared to previous years due to increased vigilance.

“We have innovative ways of catching those who cheat and irregularly distribute examination material because the culprits are now using technology to cheat,” Dr Kivilu said.

He, however, declined to divulge details on the methods that the exams council was using.

The new exam boss said revealing the information would give perpetrators a hint, they would pre-empt the measures and breach them.
