Joseph Nkaissery sorry for beating up of journalists

Interior Cabinet Secretary Joseph Nkaissery on Tuesday apologised for the assault on journalists by General Service Unit officers at the weekend.

“I am very sorry. The officers were on high alert after receiving reports that the Mombasa Republican Council was planning an attack. Unfortunately, the journalists were caught in the crossfire,” he said.

Two journalists and three county officials were injured during the incident at Galana Agricultural Corporation Development Ranch on Saturday.

The CS, however, warned the public against attacking police officers. “We must respond to anyone attacking police but officers should exercise restraint. We advise them to use force only if their lives are threatened,” he said.

The Independent Policing Oversight Authority said the officers involved would be punished.

The journalists were pursuing a story on 200 cattle that were seized by the officers.

The injured are Nation’s Nehemiah Okwemba, Citizen TV’s Reuben Ogachi, Mr Abaroba Barisa, political adviser to Tana River Governor Hussein Dado, Mr Koshe Elema, a driver and a communications officer, Mr Ali Wario.
