Security agents are looking into the security situation in Lamu County before making a decision on whether to lift or extend the dusk to dawn curfew imposed four months ago.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Joseph Ole Lenku on Saturday evening said security agencies will review the curfew depending on the security situation in Lamu.

"We are jointly looking into the Lamu situation to confirm that it has returned to normalcy. Indications are that some threats still exist and because of that we will make a conclusive decision by Tuesday next week," he said.

The CS was speaking during the closing ceremony of the Kenya-Ethiopia Joint Border Commissioners and Administrators meeting at Travellers Beach hotel in Mombasa.

Mr Lenku said the curfew is in place to enhance security and safety of Lamu residents.

The curfew was imposed on July 19 this year by Inspector General of Police Mr David Kimaiyo after a series of attacks in Mpeketoni, Panda Nguo, Hindi and Witu.

More than 90 people were killed and 3,000 others displaced from their homes in the attacks.

Last month, Mr Kimaiyo announced that the curfew had been extended to October 22 to allow security officers “accomplish the mission.”

The police boss said security personnel were still conducting operations in the area and that Boni and adjoining forests remain prohibited areas.

At the same time Mr Lenku said the IG's order on the Officers Commanding Police Divisions (OCPDs) not to issue press statements unless they are at the scene of crime was still in place.
He said the move was not aimed at gagging the police but is part of the National Police Service procedures and code of ethics.
