The Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development has approved a training curriculum for middle-level colleges offering diplomas in journalism and media studies.

The curriculum that was developed by the Media Council of Kenya will see students sit examinations set and marked by the Kenya National Examinations Council (Knec).

“It comes with specific tailored course teaching modules that seek to fill in the competence gaps that the industry has been longing for,” Media Council Deputy CEO Victor Bwire said.

The curriculum, which has been under review since 2014, was ratified on June 25.

Mr Bwire said the curriculum had been examined by the Technical and Vocational Education and Training Authority and the Commission for Higher Education and given a clean bill of health.

“With (the) Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development’s approval, colleges will be required to use the guide and the examinations will be handled in collaboration with Knec,’ he added.

He said the council had set up an industry-led committee for college inspection and accreditation.
