Freelance journalist found hanging in hotel room in Murang’a

A freelance journalist based in Murang’a was found hanging from the roof of a hotel room on Saturday.

Esbon Machia, 37, was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he died as medics tried to resuscitate him.

The body was taken to the Bishop Okoye Mortuary in Thika.

He was once a reporter for the People Daily newspaper and Radio Citizen before he quit to do freelance writing.

His mother, Wanjiru Machia, 65, said her son had suffered from depression and bouts of hallucinations before he took his life.

“He told his friends that some people wanted to kill him,” she said.

Machia is survived by a wife and a one-year-old daughter.

He will be buried on Thursday at his parent’s home in Githunguri Village, Kandara, in Murang’a County.
